Researching the student view

Block 2, Weeks 13 & 14, Activity 1b:

Dahlstrom et al.(2012)

The study is conducted across various universities in America. The authors focus on student use, perceptions and ownership of technology, using surveys to produce topical and trending data. The overarching findings are that:

1. Students use laptops and portable devices more

2. There is a distinction in their use of technology to communicate socially and to communicate with their tutors

3. It is the basic technologies which have the greatest impact on students.

Judd and Kennedy (2011)

The study is conducted amongst Australian medical students at one university. The authors focus on student use technology, in particular, how they use the technology to perform tasks, both individual and multiple and how often. The overarching findings are that:

1. Women are the better multitaskers

2. Students are not the multitaskers they are expected to be.

How does the study compare with the ECAR study?

As the studies are considering different aspects of use i.e. one general and one specific, it isn’t possible to draw any comparable conclusions other than the fact that students don’t appear to be using technology in the way one would envisage.

Are similar findings emerging?

Yes, students are not using technology in the way that is being envisaged.

Are there any differences in what is being reported for students in the USA compared with medical undergraduates in Australia from several years ago?

For me, there is no difference in what is being reported, which I would argue is that dangerous assumptions are being made about how students actually use technology. I think the ECAR study is the means by which changes in student behaviour can be monitored, particularly as new technologies emerge.
