Methodological issues in exploring the learner experience

Block 2 Weeks 13 & 14, Activity 2:

Here we focus on the different methodologies employed to explore the learner experience in using technology to enhance their studies. These range from audio logs, video logs, surveys through to in-depth case studies. Which is employed very much depends on what is being researched i.e. is it the learner voice generally or the different aspects of learning and teaching.

This takes us back to Conole et al. and the LXP project. For me the overarching findings are:

1. Students use the web extensively

2. Students use mobiles , emails and text to communicate,

3. Students are ambivalent about discussion forums

4. Blog usage varies

5. Students use ICT to complete assignments

6. Students use VLE to meet a specific need and it is context dependent

7. Students are concerned with time benefits and accessibility

8. Students place greater value on the technology they have discovered for themselves

9. How students use the tools varies across the disciplines.
