Interesting observations…

I vowed I would not be in this position so early in the course but here I am trying to catch up. Quite simply, last week did not go to plan and I decided in the end that W201 marking and the revision tutorial had to take priority.

Having said that, I made a couple of interesting observations which had some relevance to the issue of accessibility, which, had I not been studying H810, would probably have passed me by.

The first was in relation to my daughter. She has recently been diagnosed as having an issue with her focusing. The significance of the problem and its impact at school was not fully appreciated until our visit to the consultant a couple of weeks ago; quite simply, she can’t copy work from the board or out of a book as her eyes do not focus from one task to the other. The effect of the drops in her eyes at the hospital was to ‘paralyse’ her focus resulting in a couple of days away from school. The knock-on effect of this was ‘catching-up’ (a familiar theme in the household at the moment). Previously, this was a case of borrowing another girl’s book and copying the work into her own, which we now know is not a viable option. Instead, the agreement with the school was for the teachers to give her photocopies of the work which she can stick into her book instead. A simple solution but unfortunately one which is at the mercy of the teaching staff. The subsequent battle reinforced much of what I have studied so far, until everyone is on board with accessibility and it becomes the norm as opposed to the exception, progress will be slow.

The second occured at my revision tutorial for W201 on Saturday. I was at Northumbria University in a relatively old building and one which has clearly been adapted to make ‘reasonable adjustment’ for student’s with disabilities. The room I was in resembled a mini lecture theatre; the disabled provision was at the front; so close to the board it would be a bit like being in the front row of a cinema and so far to one side the view of the screen was distorted. One of the main complaint’s from students in the resources on challenges was the feeling of ‘standing out’…
