Proactivity raising its head again

I have just read my last post about how I now appear to have settled into the course. I have but…

I like the course but I do think this emphasis on ‘proactivity’ is marring the ability of all its participants to contribute effectively. Linking the last activity to the TMA certainly ensured plenty of collaboration, unlike the first collaborative activity. However, the downside of this has been to turn it into a competition. The more assertive members of the group ensure they take the lead so as to be able to evidence ‘proactivity’ in the task. But what about the less assertive members? How do they ever get the chance to develop that skill. In SA 6.4, Helen raises questions about whether there should be role allocation. I think that in order to give everyone a fair chance, there has to be some tutor intervention. It must be clear from the forums who is in more need and after all surely part of the competency of an elearning professional is inclusion of all course members. I accept that there will always be those who don’t have a desire to get involved but there are also those who feel intimidated by the more able. I was particularly impressed with the way in which group B made sure that everyone had ‘a fair crack at the whip’. The more proactive made the effort to include everyone; all contributions were treated seriously and discussed and those that couldn’t attend Skype meetings were asked their opinion before decisions were made.

It is sad, but I feel that I made the mistake of trying to by ‘proactive’ from the outset. The punishment, well one only has to look at the the Unit 7 forum to get the gist of that.

  1. Our H807 tutor interferred and allocated a group task to a ‘leader’ who then promptly did NOTHING i.e. the experiencel left the rest of us with a dead duck. In H808 in the six group task we did I held back, willing to participate while three others effectively bassed the leadership baton around, this and all SIX participants having the manners, sense, professionalism and time meant we had a terrific experience. It is a complex one though. Stats show that of all blog users 90& simply read, 9% blog and comment from time to time leaving those who clearly enjoy doing so to be the active participants.
